SKYPE: COMPARISON AND CONTRAST (40 points)

Last week got us off to a big start with figuring out a way to organize the Web for our students and staff. This week we will look at three different tools that have similarities but yet offer a different approach in the the way they work and how they could be used in a library setting. We will be looking at:

The class will be divided into four groups and each group being assigned one of the tools. Each group will have 10 minutes to teach the rest of us how the tool works. During your 10 minutes tell us:
  • how the tool operates -- how does it present information; the interface; the tricks in using (if there are any)
  • how is the information added to the tool; how much labor would it take on the part of the librarian (time is hard to come by) and what kind of information could be presented-- is it hard to add video, for instance but adding links is easy?
  • your impression of whether students would use this as a way to find information; is this tool better than what you are using now? In what way?
  • finally, using one of the LiveBinder projects from your group try to duplicate the activity of applying the same kind of information types from last week. You don't have to completely replicate the LiveBinder project but just be sure to use the same kind of information types that we did last week. Which is better? Would they be useful together or is one enough?

I have set up a Doodle and each of the students in the sessions can choose which application you want to work on. There should be no more than 4 students working together on a single application.

In order for the rest of the class to follow your discussion, each group will need to have a Google Presentation ready to share with the rest of the class. As you discuss your elements then we can follow with screen shots that you have put together.

Grading: Obviously everyone in the group will get the same grade. You can put together your presentation any way you want. Certainly use Skype as a means for collaborating or whatever other communication devices you would like. Keep in mind that 10 minutes (updated 9/2) isn't a long time and so you will need to be ready.

Google Slide Presentation: 20 points
Addressing the bullets above: 15 points
Give us an example of a school library that is using this tool: 5 points (an easy way to find this is by <sites:blendspace library> for example.
